Choosing Best OEM Replacement Parts for your Sports Bike

Motorcycle parts have been of two types, OEM (Original Manufacturer) and Aftermarket parts. The after-market products have been mostly produced by aftermarket manufacturers and have been used as replacement parts. These aftermarket products have been essentially used to enhance the performance of the bike. Whenever repairing or upgrading a bike, motorcycle parts have been required. A majority of customers would only prefer OEM and these have been usually only available at dealerships. In a majority of cases, a number of replacements have not been easily available in the market. Therefore, finding these parts might become tedious and expensive.

Understanding the differences between OEM and Aftermarket

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufactured. It refers to auto or bike parts that are made by a bike manufacturer itself. You may also come across the terms O.E.S. and OE that will mean Original Equipment Supplied and Original Equipment respectively. While a number of times, the terms OEM and OES are interchangeable, OE is a term usually referred to any original equipment on the bike. Most OE bike parts and components are not actually made by the bike manufacturer. Nonetheless, the automakers will buy and assemble them.

On the other hand, Aftermarket auto parts are bought and added to a vehicle at the dealership or after the vehicle has left the dealership. Bike manufacturers do not make them. Aftermarket parts are often used as automotive replacement parts. However, they can also function as specialty add-ons to enhance both appearance and performance.

Receiving an estimate

If you know the types of repairs required, make a list before you actually arrive. The repair shop will inspect your bike along with estimate repairs in a more efficient manner. You should request quotes from different sources. As replacement parts from your dealership will be somewhat more expensive, it will help you receive a quote from as many sources as possible. Most of repair shops will under bid to get you in the door. They will only be adding unneeded services later.

After thorough inspection, you can have the repair garage dispose of parts as retained for further inspection. Make sure that you obtain verbal or written estimate for repairs.
